Orlando. A preview by Palomo

"He - for there could be no doubt of his sex
Though the fashion of the time did something to disguise you"

The LCF graduate designer's second collection was inspired by Virginia Wolf's book "Orlando", the story of an English hero born as a male nobleman during the reign of Elizabeth I. The eponymous character undergoes a mysterious change of sex at his thirties and lives on for more than 300 years into modern times without ageing perceptibility. That is exactly the idea the designer conceived this new collection with. Paolo has created an image of a man who fuses the exuberance of characters like Diana Ross, Cher or the New York Dolls and the eccentricity of manly figures such as Mohammed Ali or Mike Tyson. Orlando addresses different periods of history through the evolution of the idea of sexuality.

Palomo Spain will present his latest autumn-winter 2016 collection during Moscow Fashion Week on the 25th of March.

The concept of gender fluidity and gender neutrality has been something designers have explored quite heavily in the recent years. It has become such a crucial part of the industry that even Spanish high-street retailer Zara, part of Inditex group launched a gender-neutral collection this month.

More-so, department stores such as Selfridges in London have created concept spaces like "Agender", "an environment in which you are given the freedom to transcend notions of his and hers". American denim company, Levi's also just launched a gender-neutral fashion pride range in aid of the Harvey Milk Foundation.

The future has no gender lines and the wider acceptance of a no-boundaries style is pushing designers to translate their inspiration and ideas for both genders.
